So, I have decided to get a job. This thought came to me as I began to look at the price of furniture. It was much more than I expected. Basically, getting a job will have multiple benefits:
1. It will make me more employable for a full-time job after we move. So far, the only jobs on my resume are a high school job and some summer jobs.
2. Money! This might seem obvious but if I am able to earn some extra money to put into savings, then we won't feel so guilty if we get a little bit nicer furniture. Not anything too fancy, just not from Goodwill or a garage sale.
I noticed a sign at a place close to where we live that said they were hiring. It's a marketing research company which is perfect because that is sorta what I do. I did that for a year and a half in high school and was pretty good at it. Most people hate the thought of calling people to do phone surveys but I have talked to some very nice people. It can be monotonous but I like the changes. You never talk to the same person twice and the studies you do change quite often (if its anything like the job I had before). I filled out an online application last Tuesday. They called me yesterday to set up an interview for today at 4:30.
Here's how the interview went: I was super nervous. Kris and I went on a walk and I had him ask me all sorts of interview questions to help me get ready. I also tried on about 5 different shirts to see which one looked the most professional with my black business pants for the interview. I even straightened my hair, so you know this was serious. I showed up for the interview and the guy conducting the interview, while I'm sure he was actually older than me, did not seem like it. He was wearing khaki shorts and a Utah shirt. Awkward. The interview was a breeze though. He just read questions from a paper and I answered them. He jotted down notes. Sometimes, he couldn't even read the question. I had to read a couple paragraphs for him, just to make sure I knew how to read probably. Also, that people can understand me.
And... I have Orientation on Monday! At first, I was pretty sure that meant I was totally hired but it doesn't. It's a two hour training they have you go to and then you have to take a test after the presentation before you're hired. Basically, this is just so they don't have to pay you for the orientation, I think. Oh well. I'm not terribly worried since I have so much experience. I get to make my own schedule, anywhere from 12 to 40 hours per week (closer to 12 for now, my classes are hard this semester). This also means I will never have to work on a Sunday which is nice. They have a sliding pay scale depending on number of hours you work as well as your quality and number of completions. I was happy to hear that because even though I won't have many hours, I should have at least good quality because of my previous experience.
As if I haven't rambled enough... I might have another job, too. I had to go up to my SFL professor's office on Monday to take an exam (I had missed the days it was in the testing center due to a medical emergency). As I was walking up with him after class, he asked if I would be enrolled in school summer term. I will be (it is my last semester EVER!!). He informed me that the reason he was asking was because he wanted me to be his TA. He said I was the best writer in the class. I told him I would be really excited to have that opportunity. So, no details worked out and its not official or anything, but the potential is still way exciting.
