Lucy Lyn Cannon

We are excited to announce the arrival of the newest member in our family, Lucy Lyn Cannon. She was born on May 29, 2013 at 5:37 PM. She weighed 6 lbs 4 oz and was 19.5 inches long. She came with lots of dark hair and beautiful full lips that all the nurses commented on. We were so happy to finally meet her!

The delivery was a great experience for me (well, probably as great as a childbirth can go anyway). I went to the doctor on Tuesday morning (the 28th... 2 days past my due date) and he stripped my membranes. He asked if I wanted to be induced. Kris and I had decided that was what we wanted since there are greater risks the longer you wait with gestational diabetes so I told him yes. I hadn't made a whole lot of progress (really, not much of anything) on my own, so I was preparing myself for a C-section since they are a lot more common with inductions when the mom hasn't already started dilation before induction.

The plan of action was to go in Tuesday night around 9 when they would give me Cervadil (I think that's what it was called). It is basically a medication to help you get more dilated/effaced before they start pitocin. Here's a picture of me heading out to go to the hospital
Once we got there and I got all hooked up to the monitors, we found out I was already having contractions every 3-7 minutes. I could not feel them at all but I had gotten dilated to a 2 since the doctor's visit that morning. The nurse called the doctor and he didn't want to start the medicine with me already having contractions so Kris and I just tried to sleep as much as we could. Finally, around 4:30 they did start it since my contractions had slowed down.

The doctor came in around 8 to check on me and break my water. I had started feeling some contractions a little, but not much. He also started me on a little bit of pitocin. So we waited
Around 10 AM, we called the nurse in to ask about epidurals. I had wanted to play it by ear and see how I was feeling. Well, 2 hours after the pitocin I was feeling the contractions pretty strong. The nurse had said at the beginning of the day that I mostlikely would not deliver until late in the evening, after her shift was over, and I just didn't think I'd be up to those all day. I was doing okay but figured if I would decide to do an epidural anyway, why wait? The nurse agreed so she let me know there was one woman who would need it before me and I could get it in about a half hour. Well, then there kept being more women who were farther along than me and wanted one so they would get to have the epidural. I ended up waiting two and a half hours and for a while one contraction would start before the first one ended so I felt like I was just in constant pain. So Kris stayed with me and we did breathing and put on some relaxing music. I was VERY happy to get my epidural though when he finally was able to come in.

After my epidural, I was able to relax and take a nap. The next time she checked me, about 3 hours after the epidural guy left, I was at a 9! Relaxing really helped get things going. The actual delivery was short and easy for me and then we had a cute baby! We sure do love her :)
